Now Then, Sunshine! is a cluttered desk, an array of paint, pens and pencils, and me: a titchy Yorkshire lass called Jules Birkby. I’m a hand-lettering and watercolour artist, with permanently inky fingers and a slight obsession with words.
I spent a decade working as a writer in advertising and digital agencies, before deciding to change career at the end of my maternity leave. I’m still a passionate wordsmith, but instead of writing creatively, I now make words look as beautiful as possible through a range of hand-drawn and painted modern calligraphy styles.
There are few things I love more than sitting down with a cup of tea and a paint brush and creating something beautiful from a quote, phrase or even just a word. Cards and pieces for the wall are my main focus, but I also do commercial work and always love a good commission.
I’m a big believer in looking after our beautiful, fragile planet and keeping our environmental footprint as light as possible. I’ve swapped the standard cello card bags for biodegradable ones, which are made from starch and are fully compostable. My commercially-printed cards are all printed on 100% recycled card in eco-friendly toners too and all my work is printed here in the UK.
I’m also a keen supporter of Just A Card, a brilliant campaign to highlight the importance of buying from independent shops, artists and designers. Its message is that all purchases – even just a card – are vital to the survival of small businesses. I couldn’t agree more!
